>> summer. >> let's get moving on this wednesday morning 5:00 a.m. temperatures 77 at national. in the 90s by noon. in fact by 11:00, 11:05 start, 92 by then. 95 at 5:00 with a chance of a storm or two and highs in the upper 90s. code orange air quality and a heat advisory by noon. storms this morning coming out of pennsylvania dipping in toward western maryland, northern maryland and parts of west virginia. we see it still hanging back toward pittsburgh, this area of showers is dipped into western maryland and parts of west virginia. in hancock, over toward hagerstown, we've seen lightning and thunder. just north of westminister and carol county headed toward baltimore county. hagerstown with a thunderstorm, 68. 70s around 80.

in southern maryland a heat advisory from noon until 9:00. just about everybody east of route 152. monika samtani, happy wednesday. happy fourth of july. you know what? fireworks are still on in the district. i'm happy to say, if you are planning to head there tonight, although there are no hov restrictions all day today, they will keep those express lanes headed northbound for you to get into the district. easily and southbound to get out easily as well. in the meantime, we are dealing with a serious situation in greenbelt on the northbound side of the bw parkway. it is a pedestrian struck. i know that there are crews on the scene. so be aware of that. you can be aware that have with traffic forming through there. no problem on 66. nice and light into downtown right now. coming up in my next report, coming up on the bw parkway

situation. this morning tens of thousands of residents here would be willing to trade fireworks for a different kind of power. >> they would like to get the electricity back in their homes. in the last hour dominion virginia had a total of 33,000 power outages statewide. pepco reported 69,000 customers without power, almost 51,000 in montgomery county. 5300 in prince george's county and almost 9000 in the district. 9news now reporter delia is live in one of the hardest hit areas in silver spring. they were hoping you could work your magic again for them delia. >> reporter: this might even be a little too much for me, honestly. ten brooke and dryden intersection here in silver spring, we are steps away from holy cross hospital. ken has been staging a sit in, of sorts, to raise awareness to

the dire situation here in the neighborhood. ken, flash that over to some of the downed wires and tell me why you are here. >> the wires are down. there is a big tree up here we can't see yet. it is on maryland park and planning commission property. no one can make a decision to come and cut it. i offer ike leggett to come out here with a chainsaw, with me and we'll cut it. if he's got the guts. >> reporter: there are serious health concerns here. >> yeah a lot of my neighbors have health issues and this is a main thoroughfare for ambulances, police, fire departments and a major bus route. it is now shut down. why? because people are too lays toy make a decision. >> reporter: and you are told at least the weekend maybe monday or tuesday until you get power restored? >> that is what the neighborhoods are -- neighbors have told me yes, ma'am. >> reporter: ken is one of the people frustrated at pepco's

slow action. pepco says listen, we are working as hard as possible and friday is realistic for many folks in regard to getting their power restored. tom graham was on our program yesterday. let's listen to what he had to say. >> reporter: if we bring back the entire circuit. >> let's say 1100 customers on that circuit, we believe all the customers are restored at that time. there could be some damage down the lane. it could be a blown transformer, a blown fuse. the customer gets a call saying their service is back but their service is not back, we need them to call until we get up and running. >> reporter: that was tom graham, talking about some of these issues with downed wires. maybe the confusion that some folks are getting, in regard to whether or not their power is back up and running. communication has been a concern and an issue for a lot of

folks. we will maintain our position here on ten brooke and dryden street. it is dark, i'm trying to look at the street sign, and we will bring more lit, hopefully, to this intersection in this dire situation here in silver springs. mike, andrea, back to you. the lingering damage from our epic storm has also prompted some communities to cancel their fourth of july celebration. >> they want to focus on line- up first. they include the independence day events in montgomery college in rockville, the maryland soccer plex in german town and einstein high school in kensington. gaithersburg canceling their celebration at the fairgrounds. but they may try to hold that at a later date. jessica doyle is on the national mall and has more with the celebrations that will indeed go on. good morning jess. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. let me wish everybody a happy

fourth of july. a lot of celebrations have been canceled, but this one has not. after the last couple of days we have all had, let's have a party. why not? come out to the national mall. you don't have power potentially at our house anywhere. you are going to be sweating, so come out and sweat with a whole bunch of friends. let's look at the scene behind me. obviously a beautiful morning here at the national monument. they are going to have a jazz concert that you can come watch and at 9:10 to 93:00, that is when the fireworks happen. so how are you going to get here? i want to give you some statistics and facts here about metro. what you need to know about today. 100,000 passengers are expected. the trains that are likely the stations that are likely to be very crowded are smithsonian and federal triangle. so you are going to want to consider other options beside that. you have tons of options with a

little bit of a walk. really, try to avoid those stations if you can. you will have near rush hour service from 6:00 p.m. to midnight tonight. that is an option for you to get in and out. there will be no rush fares. you will be going through security checkpoints. some things that are not allowed, guns, alcohol, fireworks that you bring yourself, and grills. there will be mall access from 10:00 a.m. onward. you can get to the capital complex, where they are going to, of course, have a capital fourth concert from 8:00 to 9:30. you can get there at 3:00 p.m. one last thing i want to tell you, of course, it is very hot today. it is going to be in the high 90s, which howard is talking about. wring your -- bring your water and in case you are curious, yes, there are port a pottys.

lots and lots of those. >> jessica doyle reporting live from the national mall where she will be joined by a lot of sweaty people. >> that is true. thanks jess. an investigation is underway into a deadly overnight house fire in southeast washington. dc police officers have been directing traffic around the scene, which is on 17th street. the fire was reported shortly after 2:00 this morning. it was located on the top floor of a four story building there. when firefighters got to that top floor, they found a woman's body inside that apartment. that was the only unit to get serious fire damage from this. eight families in a prince william county in a mobile home park can stay in place for now. last week the holly acres residents were asked to leave after a county inspector determined their mobile homes were unsuitable for living. the park was flooded out last september by tropical storm lee. the biggest concern, according

to the inspects tore, is the park's makeshift electrical system. he says it is a safety hazard. the residents disagree and have hired their own lawyer to fight the decision. monika just told us about problems on the green line along with that, they are still holding an investigation into what caused a green line train to lose power during last night's commute. the train stopped on the tracks, and passengers were forced to wait on the train for 30 minutes while metro employees tried to figure out whether the track still had power going through them. >> the police except telling us the tracks were hot. >> passengers had to jump off the train and walk half a mile back to the college park station platform. about 100 people were on board. metro provided shuttle buses to get their passengers to their destinations. the push to extend metro rail beyond dulles airport got

a huge shot in the arm. the lowdon county board of supervisors voted yesterday to support phase ii of the project. phase ii extends the line past reston to dulles. the vote means lowdon is committing $270 million toward construction. it was a close 5-4 vote. it's been months since a deadly mistake strained the relations between the u.s. and pakistan. >> but now an apology from secretary of state hillary clinton has opened a key supply line in the war on terror. that story, coming up. and there is a good progress report in the fight against one of the biggest wildfires in colorado. we'll update that when we come back.

secretary of state hillary clinton has expressed an apology for the deaths of soldiers in pakistan last november. that pollgy helped pakistan decide they could open up critical supply routes in pakistan. this is why you should leave it to the experts. doctors are treating nine people injured in a fireworks explosion last night in new hampshire. the explosion ignited a back deck and filled a house with smoke. several of the victims are children and at last word two youngsters were in critical condition.

the waldo canyon fire in colorado is now 70% contained. the parts closest to the city are fully contained. hundreds of families with go back home but the fire destroyed 350 homes. they are a favorite of local seafood lovers. but there are not as many ready to eat crabs in the chesapeake bay this summer. bryce harper's chances are getting better when it comes to making the all-star team. and next, howard has triple-digits in his 7-day forecast, we'll be back. ♪

good morning. 5:16 on this independence thai. -- day. here's howard. >> reporter: the heat index will top 100, maybe 105 today. air temperatures may get close to 100. more likely tomorrow, friday and saturday. another heat wave or hotter wave, i don't know what you want to call it. weatherwise, let's talk about this morning. first things first. we have a heat advisory in effect for the washington and baltimore metro there. it will be plenty hot, this starts at noon, goes until 9:00 p.m. we are talking about heat index values which could get to 105.

as far as today's forecast, a hot one. in the low 80s here by 8:00. low to mid 90s by noon. winds west northwest 5 to 10 miles per hour. by 4:00 an isolated storm forecasting a high today of 98 degrees with the 94 degrees reading at 8:00 p.m. at 9:00 for the fireworks we have a chance still for that isolated storm. it is going to be very warm with stems still in the low 90s downtown. here's a look at the radar this morning. south and southeast of pittsburgh, little bit of lightning. that has definitely weakened. you see it here east of romney with a lightning bolt in the last 15 minutes. past hagerstown, there in northern frederick county. slip in toward cross junction here, northern frederick

county, virginia. it is all moving south and east toward frederick in the next 15 minutes. 68 in hagerstown. in dc this morning, we have mid to upper 70s in the metro. 69 for vienna, 73 in leesburg, 74 in croftton. starting to see a little bit of light, a half hour before sunrise, 77 degrees, humidity 69%. very muggy. this is where temperatures will be triple-digit today. we will be watching that. we have the storms up across new england, trailing toward us, with this northwesterly flow, we have to watch for the threat of a few storms to pop. the heat and humidity temperatures rise to about 98. we dip into the 70ston, upper 70s in town, low 70s north and west. by the way yellow alert today

toll tomorrow -- tomorrow and friday. 100 tomorrow, 101 friday. saturday will be the hottest day at 102. they will all be hot. looking better by sunday and monday. let's go to monika samtani. she has the timesaver traffic. >> reporter: an unfortunate situation in greenbelt. park police are on the scene here. two pedestrians struck just about an hour ago. don't know what they were doing on the bw parkway, it is the situation where the northbound side at route 199 is blocked right now. right now southbound side, by the way, is not affected. if you are planning to head in on route 50, live look there no problems to report. a great morning to head out to the beach and no delays right now. aaa is saying overall across the country, 35.5 million people will hit the road. you will have traffic in terms of the holiday.

virginia. toward meyersville, heavier showers. all it have moving southeast. temperatures are running in the 60s and 70s, even near 80 in annapolis and cambridge. cumberland with the showers and storms, the heat advisory covers many areas, especially east of routes 15 and 2. heat index to 105. here's monika samtani with timesaver traffic. a tragic start to the holiday. >> reporter: yeah if you are planning to head on the northbound side of the bw parkway, what howard is referring to, is two pedestrians were struck at about 4:20 this morning. unfortunately, one is dead and authorities are on the scene right now. what they are doing is blocking off access from the beltway to get onto the northbound side of the bw parkway. what i suggest is to the north of that, go ahead and take kennel worth satisfy and to the south that have you can take route 450.

you cannot access northbound bw parkway trying to get into greenbelt from the beltway and with the two pedestrians struck this morning that investigation may take some time. let's take you outside live. first of all, if you are planning to head over 20á to 270 the good news is there are no hov restrictions. back over to our maps and this time to the other side of town, no problems on 270 again as you head in from gaithersburg. the entire western stretch of the beltway south toward tyson's corner looks good right now. i'll update on the bw parkway at 5:39. today campaign 2012 picks back up. >> it does. the presumptive republican nominee mitt romney wail peer in a parade in new hampshire. president obama is returning from camp david, he is going to help swear in new citizens and then host a fourth of july

barbecue for military families at the white house. america's 2012 independence day parade will step off around noon today. bands and floats will march along continues institution avenue from seventh to 17th street. many people in those crowds will just be getting started. and the big finale this independence day happens tonight on the national mall. the annual capital fourth concert will lead into the night's main event and then a huge fireworks display, of course caps it all off. 9news reporter jessica doyle is live with more. >> reporter: happy birthday america. she turns 236 years old today, going strong, looking gorgeous and it is gorgeous out here, let me tell you, on the national mall this morning. lots of big events planned for today. one thing we want to tell you, straight off, bring lots of water. howard has been talking about how hot it is going to be and you definitely want to pay

attention to what he has to say. not only bring your water, but bring your sunscreen. a lot of people are expected to show up. at least 500,000 are expected to use the metro system today. and if you are driving, know that there are lots of street closures to keep in mind. now let's show you a schedule of events so you can write this down in your personal calendar, and think about what you are going to do today. we want to tell you at 11:45 to 2:00 p.m. the parade will take place and that is along constitution avenue from 7th to 17th street. right here at the monument they are going to have a jazz concert. that is a capital concert at the capital complex. at 9:30 the big boomers are going to go off and it is expected to be an amazing show

this year. in terms of access at the mall, 10:00 a.m. you can start setting up here. we have the smithsonian folk life festival going on today, and you can get on the u.s. capital complex starting at 6:00 p.m. so show up early, get the great spots so you can watch the concerts and the fireworks right over my head. now let's look at the latest power outage numbers this morning. people still recovering after friday's storm. dominion virginia reports 73,000, 38,000 of those are in northern virginia alone. pepco is reporting 57,000 customers still without power. 45,000 of those in montgomery county. just over 5000 in prince george's county, 7500 in dc. to beat the heat there will be cooling centers operate go on this holiday. in prince george's county the shelters at northwestern high

school and the camp land community center have closed because of low turnout. the bowie center is open 24 hours a day. also st. matthews united methodist church will open from 9:00 to 5:00. three centers will be open the glenn aridden teresa banks complex and the rolling chill emcommunity center. richard montgomery high school is open, the mid county and white oak community recreation centers will open from 10:00 to 9:00, and the bethesda and wheaton libraries will be open from noon until 8:00. delia is live at the site of a power outage in silver spring and a mini protest i guess too right? >> reporter: right. ten brooke avenue in silver spring. now that the daylight has broken, take a look. you can see this utility pole

snapped in several pieces, taking down some wires. kevin, you can see that large tree has taken down some more wires, and now it is completely blocking ten brooke and we have been hearing to holy cross hospital, which is right up the hill, ken has been staging a protest. >> what i understand the tree is on maryland park and planning commission rot and it fell on to public county property and no one can make a decision as to who is supposed to trim it out so this work can be fixed. so all the people in the neighborhood can have power again. >> reporter: there are health issues to be concerned about, and bus routes and ambulance routes and so on. >> fire trucks, police, everybody. >> reporter: so you are one of the many people who are actually a little frustrated to say the least, with pepco. however we did see a utility

truck pull up on scene. we have been on the scene since 4:30 this morning, so perhaps they watched this devastating scene and they heard ken's plea and came out. they have assessed the situation and were hoping they would reposition themselves. we have had tom graham, the president of pepco on our station. let's listen to what he had to say. >> we have had about 2,000 wire down reports. a lot of wires we are trying to get to, they are a priority for us, you it is a volume issue. >> reporter: it is a volume issue and this is major volume. we are hoping crews will take care of this issue as well. mike, andrea, some neighbors are keeping their fingers cross that had this mess will be cleaned up. >> we wish them the best as well. even with the holiday, we still have daily deals, and they are

martinsburg just getting in on some showers now. temperatures in the upper 60s. we are still in the upper 70s and it is a sticky morning out there. mostly cloudy skies, on the michael and son weather camera. 77 degrees with a northwest wind at 10, and the humidity 69%. so yeah, another very muggy start. a lot of heat in the middle of the country. temperatures 100 to 105 from minneapolis to st. louis. the heat is going to build east a little bit over the next few days. we are going to see this ridge in the middle expand east, still a threat for the isolated thunderstorms the next few arches. inthe heat and humidity will be the bigger issue and that has pretty much made me give up on my lawn for the summer. heat and thunderstorms 98 this afternoon, isolated storms thursday and friday. lows in the 70s to near 80 with the highs 100, maybe even

102 by saturday. by sunday mid 90s, a front will knock us down to 90 and if you going to the nats game at 11:05, drink plenty of water and stay cool. such a sad situation on the bw parkway northbound. if you are planning to head over to the beltway in that area, you'll want to know at about 4:20 this morning two different cars it happened on the side of the road. while they were stopped they beth got struck, one was killed. park police are on the scene. they are not allowing access from the beltway to get onto the northbound side of the bw parkway, so you are going to need to choose your alternate. on the northbound side choose kennel wood avenue and give them the space they need. in greenbelt route 193 all lanes are blocked. let's take you over it a camera
